As you probably know your FAA license never expire, but to remain current, it has to be validated every 24 calendar months by a Biennial Flight Review. The BFR Biennial Flight Review need to be conducted by a FAA instructor CFI or a FAA examiner. The BFR consists of minimum one hour ground training, and a one hour flight.
During the BFR you must demonstrate that you are capable of performing the maneuvers and flight skills of your license PPL, CPL or ATP To determine this, the PTS Practical Test Standards are used, just like when you did your check ride.
If you are not up to standards, the CFI will tailor a training program for you to improve whatever areas that needs to improve. What are the requirements to remain current as a Private Pilot?
To remain current as a Private Pilot, you need to accomplish a flight review. The flight review needs to be given by an authorized instructor, within the preceding 24 calendar months. And to carry passengers, you as a pilot must have made within the preceding 90 days: Three takeoffs and three landings where you have been the sole manipulator of the flight controls of an aircraft of the same category and class, and if a type rating is required, then the aircraft need to be of the same type.
If the aircraft is a tail wheel airplane, the landings must have been made to a full stop.
If operations are to be conducted during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise, with passengers on board, the pilot in command must have, within the preceding 90 days, made at least three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop during that period in an aircraft of the same category, class, and type.
